Operal is Marquis' highly successful process
design and documentation tool for the design and management of processes and
workflows - from initial concept, through detailed design, all the way to
training and ongoing maintenance. In doing so, it creates a perfect alignment
between business aims, available resources, and efficient operations. At its
heart is a database for the creation, storage and management of detailed
information relating to a specific process.

Operal provides multiple views of processes and allows targets to be set
in general and finely detailed contexts. Users are able to analyse any workflow
element to its lowest level of activity.

Operal uses a
systematic approach to the adoption of new processes and is based on the
concept that people need to be trained on the whole process and not merely on
the products to be used.
The first role of Operal is to act as a
drawing board for the Process Design. It provides an editing toolkit which
allows the entire process to be created, annotated, visualised and revised
using an easy-to-use graphical interface.
Operal provides a complete, detailed guide to
the process as it has been designed, and provides a single reference point for
all users. OPERAL breaks processes down into a hierarchical structure of Jobs,
Tasks and Steps, each of which is specifically designed meet operational aims
with reference to the resources available. Any changes to the Process can be
easily adopted.
Operal documents the precise procedures for
all tasks in the Process, and so becomes the central repository for staff
training information. Operal will print what is in effect a training
manual based on the stored information, providing the details of every task,
and explaining the reasons behind it, so that the operator knows not just what
to do but why.
Although most broadcast systems have redundancy
built into them, it is rarely self implementing and fallback systems usually
need to be brought online manually. Operal provides staff with rapid
access to a detailed description of the procedure to follow in the event of
failure or malfunction. Fallback scenarios are fully documented and kept
up-to-date. Operators can quickly and easily refer to tried and tested
workarounds to minimise or eliminate problems when things go
wrong.
